The Milly Johnson Website
CHECK OUT 'MY WEEKLY' THIS WEEK FOR A SHORT STORY BY ME ENTITLED 'ALWAYS THE BRIDESMAID'

Home

Welcome to the Milly Johnson website where you can find out a bit more about me, my books and projects and what life as an author is really like.

I hope it will be useful to any ‘nearly-there’ novelists too – after all I was once in that bracket, wondering if I’d ever get to the magic day. I did and, trust me, it’s worth persevering for!

The site will be updated regularly because it's great fun to do and I want to keep it fresh.  Plus I'm meeting some ace people, reading some fab books and it would be great to show them off too.

And, as there’s nothing like word of mouth, have a root around the links page for the tried and tested (by me).

If you would like to leave me a comment or ask a question – please click here or on the ‘Contact Milly’ page.

Hope you enjoy the read!

Becky Hindley - Actress

My novel is now available to listen to in its entirety and is beautifully read by the lovely actress Becky Hindley.  I'm thrilled to bits with what she's done with it.  Perfect voice for my story.  Perfect voice full stop actually (snarls jealously!)

Becky's website is currently under construction so if Hollywood is looking for her, it can do it via my contacts page for now.

Reviews - The Books - The Birds and the Bees (Yorkshire Pudding Club too)

The Dutch version of the Birds and the Bees

'The Birds and the Bees is the second compulsively readable novel by romantic comedy’s fastest rising star: Milly Johnson! -   Romantic comedy does not get any better than this! The Birds and the Bees is a sublimely entertaining tale peopled with wonderful characters you cannot resist taking straight to your heart! Vibrant, fast-paced, heartfelt, emotional and feel-good, The Birds and the Bees is a hilarious and heartwarming tale of love, friendship and second chances by the supremely talented Milly Johnson!Julie Bonello - Singletitles.com

'A warm, tender tale of love and betrayal from an author with a lovely touch and the ability to produce the unexpected, always with a twist of humour.  I love her.' Sarah Broadhurst, www.lovereading.co.uk

'I've been waiting for weeks to write a review of this here, having been given a preliminary copy of the book. An intelligent, humorous read - great depth and lightness, humour and pathos, the same qualities that endeared me to this author in book I - although tackled I thought here with a lighter, matured touch.

This is a book you won't put down - annoyingly you'll want to know who ends up with whom and then (I warn you) you'll be annoyed you reached the end, Escapism to leave you with a big beaming smile on your face!
I like this author. '

'Ohhh...I just loved this one, I didn't want it to end. I've been looking forward to it for ages after really enjoying the Yorkshire Pudding Club... and the good news is that Milly Johnson has triumphed again!

This is great fun and very well-written, with real warmth and wit. The characters are fab, and it all feels very fresh and original. I laughed out loud countless times, and was sorry to see it end. Sweet as honey!'

'... you must read Milly Johnson. There are two writers in this genre who can move me to tears as well as to out-loud laughter. Marian Keyes is one, Milly Johnson is the other. Milly has a true talent for making her readers feel very deeply for her characters, both her tough-but-soft female characters and her strong and sexy heroes. This is real, heart-felt life here and you can tell the difference. If you need a book to lose yourself in and one you'll want to read all over again as soon as you finish it, this is the one for you.'  Book Addict, London

AND FOR THE YORKSHIRE PUDDING CLUB....

‘Pudding Club’ is Brit chick lit at its finest, By Larissa Boyer, USA Sentinel Copy Editor, March 16, 2008  - ' One of the greatest things about books is how one never knows when she’ll come across one of the greatest books she’ll ever read. It could come at you from a friend’s recommendation, a bestseller list, a present or even perusing the books left at the vacation rental home while on holiday at Walt Disney World.  That last scenario, in case it wasn’t obvious, was how I came across “The Yorkshire Pudding Club” by Milly Johnson, a fabulous British chick lit book following three best friends who get pregnant at the same time after having a picnic on an ancient fertility symbol.  Helen is a timid blonde who wants nothing more than to have a baby with hubby Simon. After achieving her dream, though, Helen starts to take a good look at her seemingly picture perfect marriage and realizes it may not be so perfect after all.  Career woman Janey has just been offered the promotion of a lifetime when she shockingly discovers she’s going to bring a new life into the world. Janey can’t understand how her contraception failed her, but George, her husband, is ecstatic to become a dad despite the secret he holds.  The last thing Elizabeth ever thought she would encounter in life is a positive pregnancy test, especially when desperately single. Emotionally crippled after a challenging childhood, she struggles with the idea of unconditional love for her child. Will she even love it at all? This is all complicated by a long lost love reentering her life just as she gets the big baby news.
If it sounds complicated, fret not n it really isn’t. The most confusing thing about this book is its genuine British-ness. Words like “cuppa,” “bairn,” and “blimey” are used quite often. But for lovers of the British culture, it’s a breath of fresh air, whereas those new to its intricacies can read about some of the country’s most common everyday traditions.

Despite the cultural differences in the book, there are themes common to every woman around the world: friendship, love and the pure craziness of having a baby. Helen, Janey and Elizabeth have a relationship akin to New York’s favorite gals from “Sex and the City.” They often find themselves sitting around having a cuppa (tea, that is) talking about their love lives and, in this case, baby woes.

Speaking of babies, while I personally have never been pregnant, it seems to me Johnson does a spectacular job at chronicling the various thoughts, emotions and side effects women experience throughout the nine months of pregnancy. With the three different characters, she covers practically every angle possible n wanting a baby, not wanting a baby, not realizing you’re pregnant for several weeks, morning sickness, fear of death during childbirth, what painkillers are available, the massive amount of stuff you have to buy, even praying to not pooh during labor.Colorful and fun, “The Yorkshire Pudding Club” is a fast read. Its only real downfall is the fact that it is British and has limited availability here in the States. However, with a quick click on the Internet, this book can be found both new and used and shipped straight to your door.Or maybe you’ll stumble upon it on your next vacation, trip to the used book store, or if you happen to be around London any time soon.'

'Wonderful book, filled with all sorts of emotions from happiness to sadness, bullying to sex!!! Would highly recommend this' - ReadItSwapIt Forum member

Read this book last summer I think that it was and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Thought that it would be some normal chic lit but how wrong I was.  This book has it all.........friendship, bullying, babies, affairs just to name a few.  When reading it I totally felt for the main characters and felt happy when they were happy and sad when they were sad!!!!   Totally recommended read!!!!!' - Kel, ReadItSwapIt Forum

'The Yorkshire Pudding Club is a fabulous debut novel written by a sparkling new voice in women’s fiction. Milly Johnson combines laughter, tears and pathos in this hugely enjoyable tale of friendship, romance and motherhood that will delight fans of Jill Mansell and Carole Matthews.' -  Singletitles.com

‘Three friends become pregnant at around the same time. How each unexpectedly reacts is beautifully portrayed in a charming, astute first novel worthy of the sort of reaction The Bad Mother’s Handbook provoked. It’s fresh, compulsive, uplifting and highly recommended.’ Sarah Broadhurst, Bookseller.

'I was recommended this book at the airport on my way home to Spain from visiting relatives in England and how very glad I am I took the advice.  I took it to bed intending to only read a couple of pages as I was tired... 8 hours later, at 6am I'd finished the last page. What a brilliant, funny, sad, everything read and that's also from a Lancastrian.Kudos to you and hope to see more in the future.' - Dawn, Waterstones review

'I have noticed on other reviews that the word lovely keeps cropping up in association with this book and now I have read it, I can see why. I enjoyed the book so very much - but the ending is what will make me recommend it so heavily. I cannot remember sobbing so hard at a book in a long time. I won't spoil it by saying if they were happy tears or sad tears, but it affected me greatly. Just lovely!!!!!!!'  - Amazon review

'Three friends go on a trip to an ancient fertility symbol in order to help one of them finally conceive... the symbol is more potent than any of them belive possible and soon all three are in the Yorkshire Pudding Club. This is a wonderfully moving novel telling the story of nine months in the lives of three women. Even if you aren't planning on a family this is a really beautifully crafted story that never seems too far fetched.' - Sarah Skinner, Waterstones

'I enjoyed this so much, I was sorry to reach the last page. Three great leading ladies, fab observational detail and countless one-liners that had me snorting with laughter. It even made me feel clucky again, and I thought that would NEVER happen! It's warm, it's down to earth, it's very funny, and best of all, the characters are all 'normal' people that I could relate to. I felt I knew them all by the end of the book. Oh, and I agree with the other reviewers about that last scene...fantastic!' - Sukie, Amazon review

'HAVING A BABY? - BUY THIS BOOK!!!  After reading this lovely book in under 24 hours, I bought it for my friend as a birthday present in March, three weeks before she was going into hospital to give birth, because I thought it was one of the truest depictions of pregnancy I have come across in a 'story' and beautifully delivered, please excuse the pun there. She took her time over it (2 days) and said that she wished she had had this book at the beginning of her pregnancy. It made me recall so much of my own pregnancy, things I had forgotten like the linea nigra. I too was glued to my Miriam Stoppard book, as were the characters, and I found it full of brilliant tru-isms as well as one-liners that had me (too) laughing aloud.
Because of this book, my friend was a little more mentally prepared when the breast-feeding didn't kick in so easily and has asked me to say that the nipple shields advise alone will endear this book to her for ever
.' - Martina Richardson, Amazon review
